This one is from a 1971 crime caper named Confessione Di Un Commissario Di Polizia Al Procuratore Della Repubblica, and Riz Ortolani does an excellent job conjuring up funky action sounds and brassy tension. Kapingbdi came together in Liberia, West Africa, during the late 1970’s and had their own unique style. This six to seven-piece band played original compositions in a vibrant mix of African Rhythms, Soul, Spiritual Jazz, Funk and Rock. Led by Kojo Samuels on sax, flute and vocals “Born in The Night” presents the essential tracks from their rare studio LPs produced between 1978-1981. The work has been carefully edited and remastered in 2019 for vinyl LP and a 6-Page Digipack CD from Sonorama Label. Kapingbdi hail from Liberia, West Africa and have their own imitable style. They effortlessly combine traditional African music in a modern mix of Spiritual Jazz, Funk, Soul and Rock. The band is a fusion of the old and the new.

'A pretty fantastic set of soulful 70s work from Brazil – a set that's got lots of deep currents in the orchestrations, which are echoed further by the rich vocals of Amada Maita. The record's got a way of sounding sophisticated and groovy at the same time – and the arrangements often use saxes and flute to create these cool contrasting colors and tones – which makes for a record that shimmers with light one minute, then dives into the dark the next – a bit like some of the hippest EMI/Odeon material of the time, or maybe a bit like some of the fuller records cut by Emilio Santiago later in the 70s. The funky diva Martha High has been an integral part of James Brown's life and career for more than 30 years: she was his backing vocalist, hairdresser, payroll master and his always loyal and reliable confidant. The idea for this album was hatched back in 2014, whilst she was visiting the producer DJ Pari, head honcho of the Soulpower organization and tight collaborator of the soul legends Marva Whitney, The Impressions, Lyn Collins and many more. They reminisced about tours with her fellow James Brown show veterans and Martha decided that she wanted to record a tribute to JB's female vocalists. Terry Callier's first album for Cadet – and the kickoff of one of the
greatest three album runs that any soul artist ever recorded! This
one's got a different feel than the later two, as it takes songs by
Terry, and structures them with these little musical "seque" tracks in
between every song, done in a sparer folksy style that recalls Terry's
roots in the Old Town scene in Chicago. At the time, Terry was making
the transition from folk artist to soul singer – and he'd been picked up
by Jerry Butler and The Dells as a promising young songwriter, one of
the best talents of the second generation of Chicago soul stars. The
record's a stripped-down affair that features a small group with Charles
Stepney on harpsichord and organ, Callier on guitar, and backing vocals
by Minnie Riperton, Shirley Wahls, and Kitty Haywood. The album kicks
off with Terry's great little pop ditty "Ordinary Joe" – probably the
catchiest song he ever wrote – then rolls into more somber titles like
"Occasional Rain", "Do You Finally Need A Friend", "Golden Circle", and
"Blues For Marcus". A totally unique album – and a prime example of the

One of the most hard-grooving set we've heard from singer Mary Afi Usuah – a set that has all these deep, bassy currents on the bottom – which hold a nice groove underneath Mary's heavenly voice! Usuah has a range that's much greater than some of her contemporaries – no surprise, since she studied opera in Rome – but the style here is nicely gritty overall, with bumping bass and some riffing guitar that almost pushes some numbers into Betty Davis territory, but with more of a 70s Afro soul vibe.
