Erasmo Carlos - Carlos, Erasmo... (Philips,1971)

As a student and fan of Elvis, Little Richard, Bill Haley, and Chuck Berry, Erasmo indulged his primal rock urges in this sufficiently psychedelic and fuzzy LP. Arriving in 1971, Erasmo’s 1971 album was the closest thing to Tropicália around. “Carlos, Erasmo” was co-produced by the Tropicália producer, Manoel Barenbein, including a new composition from Caetano, a few arrangements courtesy of Rogério Duprat. Erasmo was backed by the musical talents of no fewer than three Mutants: lead guitarist Sergio Dias, drummer Dinho Leme and bassist Liminha, not to mention Brazil’s undisputed psychedelic axe-master, Alexander Gordin, aka “Lanny”. This album is considered a bedrock album within the Brazilian rock scene and a notable late entry in the Tropicália tradition, rocking harder than any album in his catalog, but also including wispy love songs, soul and funk moves, brassy pop tunes and a marimba-driven ode to marijuana. Nkono Teles - Party Beats (bbe, Reissue 2019)

 Cameroun-born and Nigeria-bred, this innovative multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and engineer was one of a select handful of backroom boffins that West African artists and producers would habitually call upon when they wanted a ‘modernist’ Afro-pop sound that would appeal across borders. Nkono Teles plays all instruments, and was apparently always the first to admit that singing wasn’t his forte; hence the utilization of an eleven-piece choral section! The raw electronic effects used here have always been sought-after by breaks and hip hop producers as well as DJs, with original copies (in Tabansi label) of Party Beats regularly changing hands for anything up to $700! A rare and gorgeous obscurity from the never-ending depths of the 1970’s Italian film soundtrack world. This one is from a 1971 crime caper named Confessione Di Un Commissario Di Polizia Al Procuratore Della Repubblica, and Riz Ortolani does an excellent job conjuring up funky action sounds and brassy tension. Kapingbdi - Born in the Night (Liberia, Sonorama - 2019)

 

Kapingbdi came together in Liberia, West Africa, during the late 1970’s and had their own unique style. This six to seven-piece band played original compositions in a vibrant mix of African Rhythms, Soul, Spiritual Jazz, Funk and Rock. Led by Kojo Samuels on sax, flute and vocals “Born in The Night” presents the essential tracks from their rare studio LPs produced between 1978-1981. The work has been carefully edited and remastered in 2019 for vinyl LP and a 6-Page Digipack CD from Sonorama Label. Kapingbdi hail from Liberia, West Africa and have their own imitable style. They effortlessly combine traditional African music in a modern mix of Spiritual Jazz, Funk, Soul and Rock. The band is a fusion of the old and the new.

'A pretty fantastic set of soulful 70s work from Brazil – a set that's got lots of deep currents in the orchestrations, which are echoed further by the rich vocals of Amada Maita. The record's got a way of sounding sophisticated and groovy at the same time – and the arrangements often use saxes and flute to create these cool contrasting colors and tones – which makes for a record that shimmers with light one minute, then dives into the dark the next – a bit like some of the hippest EMI/Odeon material of the time, or maybe a bit like some of the fuller records cut by Emilio Santiago later in the 70s. The funky diva Martha High has been an integral part of James Brown's life and career for more than 30 years: she was his backing vocalist, hairdresser, payroll master and his always loyal and reliable confidant. The idea for this album was hatched back in 2014, whilst she was visiting the producer DJ Pari, head honcho of the Soulpower organization and tight collaborator of the soul legends Marva Whitney, The Impressions, Lyn Collins and many more. They reminisced about tours with her fellow James Brown show veterans and Martha decided that she wanted to record a tribute to JB's female vocalists. Following DJ Pari's advice, she flew to Tokyo to partner with one of the hottest name of the new funk renaissance: Osaka Monaurail. The Japanese premiere funk orchestra has hitting stages around the world for more than two decades, and it is considered to be one of the world's leading groups in the genre. Martha could not have chosen a better band for her last LP: the band replicated the sound and feel of James Brown's music with unmatched dedication, authenticity and respect; their shading is at times almost hair raising, putting the spotlight solely on Martha and her mission. This legendary collaboration has given new life to 13 soulful hits, interpreted as only a real Soul Sister can do.

Terry Callier - Occasional Rain (Cadet, 1972)

 Terry Callier's first album for Cadet – and the kickoff of one of the greatest three album runs that any soul artist ever recorded! This one's got a different feel than the later two, as it takes songs by Terry, and structures them with these little musical "seque" tracks in between every song, done in a sparer folksy style that recalls Terry's roots in the Old Town scene in Chicago. At the time, Terry was making the transition from folk artist to soul singer – and he'd been picked up by Jerry Butler and The Dells as a promising young songwriter, one of the best talents of the second generation of Chicago soul stars. The record's a stripped-down affair that features a small group with Charles Stepney on harpsichord and organ, Callier on guitar, and backing vocals by Minnie Riperton, Shirley Wahls, and Kitty Haywood. The album kicks off with Terry's great little pop ditty "Ordinary Joe" – probably the catchiest song he ever wrote – then rolls into more somber titles like "Occasional Rain", "Do You Finally Need A Friend", "Golden Circle", and "Blues For Marcus". Wally Richardson - Soul Guru (Prestige, 1968)

Excellent Guitar driven soul jazz album with  Funk, Blues, Rock, Surf & India influences. In 1998 UK issue released on the BGP Records. Soul Guru has been a much sought after rarity among funk and soul collectors. This collection attempts to gather together some of the best of Pablo's freelance work in one volume and will no doubt plug in a few gaps in collections by the inclusion of some of the more hard to find tracks. While every effort has been taken to find the best possible sources for these recordings it is inevitable that many of the tracks have had to be dubbed from the original singles and digitally restored.

The Dutch Rhythm Steel & Showband ‎– Soul, Steel & Show (Negram Label 1975)

 Hard to find original Dutch pressing on Negram label. This is a rare  (& one of the best) Caribbean - psych - soul - funk - afro - rock steel bands albums!

This Steel band is a twelve-piece seventies party band, consisting of Surinames and Trinidadian musicians.
Since Surinam was still part of The Netherlands in those days, the name of the band abroad was The Original Trinidad Steel Band and released two albums as such (Beautiful Caribbean and Caribbean Steel & Show on Hansa, with Frank Farian as their producer), apart from their three Dutch albums. Their most interesting Dutch album is Funky Limbo (EMI, 1978), which was produced by Ernie Anches. Anches was also involved with various other funky Surinam acts, such as Oscar Harris, The Twinkle Stars and Thunderstorm.
Check the Afro-Funky bomb  "Funky Stuff", cover version of the Kool & the Gang classic tune, the "Theme from Shaft" (Great Funky version with Wah Wah Guitar & beatiful steel drums) & the Funky Rock version of "Down by the River" among others. But the whole album are gorgeous.
